Story time is one of the most cherished parts of every Kiddie Kollege day, and the research is clear about why: children who are read to regularly enter kindergarten with bigger vocabularies, longer attention spans, and stronger pre-literacy skills.
But the benefits go beyond academics. Snuggling up with a book teaches children how to sit and listen, how stories work (beginning, middle, end), and how language carries emotion. It also creates a warm, shared experience that builds trust between child and caregiver.
We encourage families to make reading a daily ritual at home. It doesn’t have to be long — even 10 minutes before bed can have a lasting impact. Visit your local library, let your child pick the books, and don’t be afraid to read the same favorite over and over. Repetition is how little ones learn.
